Gina Montalbano Zesiger
Candidate for Kansas State Board Of Education
As a first-generation Sicilian American, born to immigrant parents, I was raised in the small farming town of Silex, Missouri. I have always valued the transformative power of education. Growing up with four siblings, we thrived in our small rural community schools, where education was a cornerstone of our family's aspirations.
In 1994, I attended the University of Missouri-Kansas City, earning both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education. My journey in education began with student teaching in the Shawnee Mission School District, Kansas, where I honed my skills and passion for teaching. My professional career then took root in the North Kansas City School District, Missouri, where I embraced the roles of a fourth-grade and first-grade teacher during my 20+ career. During this time, I pursued and began a master's degree in Special Education from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. My experience here was enriched by my involvement in implementing a school-wide behavior program and leading a next generation technology and curriculum emersion program. My work in an all-school Title I building helped shape my passion for how curriculum and instruction held to high standards of results can change a school culture.
My commitment to education extended beyond the classroom as I actively contributed to curriculum development and assessment creation for my grade level across 20 elementary schools. I also dedicated myself to professional development, sharing my expertise with peers and building strong relationships within the community.
My involvement with the Missouri State Teachers Association (MSTA) and the National Education Association (NEA) underscored my dedication to supporting fellow educators. Aspiring to broaden my impact, I pursued an Education Specialist degree in Administration from Northwest Missouri State University. This qualification facilitated my transition to administration in the Park Hill School District, Missouri. As an Assistant Principal, I played a pivotal role in opening the district's newest elementary school, from planning the building to hiring staff and establishing a vibrant school community. My efforts in setting up a Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) and fostering community relationships were critical to the school's success.
Continuing my educational journey, I obtained a Doctorate in Superintendency and Higher Education from William Woods University. My relentless pursuit of excellence in education and my eagerness to lead has driven me to this next chapter of seeking a position on the Kansas State School Board. My diverse experiences as a teacher, curriculum developer, professional development leader, and school administrator have equipped me with a comprehensive understanding of the educational landscape. I am committed to fostering an inclusive, innovative, and supportive educational environment for all students in Kansas. Together, we can build a brighter future for our children through dedicated leadership, community engagement, and a steadfast commitment to educational excellence.

Business Owner
After retiring from the Missouri school system, Bryan Zesiger and I settled in Tonganoxie, Kansas, where we embarked on a new adventure by opening a Kansas Farm Winery. Our first location was established in downtown Leavenworth in 2018, followed by our farm winery and vineyard on approximately 100 acres. As proud owners and operators, we built this company from the ground up, producing over 45 handcrafted wines under our “vine to wine” philosophy. We host numerous family-style events on our farm, creating a welcoming community atmosphere. As CEO, I oversee all business operations and serve as the welcoming face of our winery, greeting customers and building our staff. Running our business is akin to educating people about a specialty crop, bridging knowledge gaps and fostering appreciation for something new. This experience has further honed my skills in leadership, community engagement, and education.
